“Do You Want To Get Well” (John’s Gospel 5:1-9)

May the grace and love of God be upon you who is listening to God’s voice today in this worship.

Burkina Faso is a country of West Africa that was one of French colonial. This country recently disconnected with relationship with French and made relationship with Russia for economic military benefit. But due to war of Russia, they have not been earning enough benefits.

Africa has three times size of north and south America and there are 55 countries. But there is not much water from rivers and lakes compared with Asia, Europe, and America. So, they have been experiencing lack of food from lack of produce. They rely on assistance from rich countries for a living.

But due to corrupt leadership, the resources earned from outside are not spent on self-relance. They are not able escaping their hard situation. Recently Korea began to help them to stand on self-reliance through agricultural skills to earn enough food. Korean support on African countries is spreading among them, and they are growing their own self-reliance. That was provided with unconditional support. It comes from mind from Word of God that gave us grace with unconditional love.

Korean people have experienced this grace in history. They experienced suffering from wrong ancient worship and corrupted leadership.  But after knowing gospel of Jesus Christ, we could find blessed way of living through Word of living God. Key point of teaching of God is to share grace with others as we received from God.

When we did not know exact way, we could not go right way. But when we knew exact way, we could see blessed way.

Today Bible lets us know about Jesus Christ healing an invalid for thirty-eighty years. Through this I hope we can find what is grace on us from God.

Let us read together John’s Gospel 5:5-9.

“One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.
When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?” “Sir, the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.” Then Jesus said to “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” At once the man was cured; he picks up his mate and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,”

Jesus Christ was extremely busy while He was proclaiming and healing in Jerusalem one day. There was a gate named Sheep Gate there where were many severely ill patients lying by pool as well. An invalid for three-eighty years old was one of them. These disabled people have a hope to go into the pool when angel came down stirring water. So, they waited for the moving of the waters. From time to time an angel of the Lord would come down and stir up the waters. The first one into the pool after each such disturbance would be cured of whatever disease they had.

That was vain hope, but people were desperate to be cured. So, this him, this vain rumor grasped their mind more than stringer. Nobody could save them from their severe destiny.

Suddenly Jesus appeared one man the invalid for thirty-eighty years. He lost entire life by that illness. He has never lived comfortable and happy life due to that illness. It was almost dying. The Lord was pity on him. Lord came to visit him not he did.

Grace is coming to visit us. He is coming to visit us. This is not our choice to be children of God but God’s choice. So, this is grace not our choice.  When we did not know Him, He came visit us to save from judge.

As the people by pool waiting for water stirring, we are Waiting for vain hope or vain dream in life. Because Lord is pity on us, he is coming to us to save from vain life through grace. This is why Lord Jesus is our grace.

We can find true way of life once Lord came to us in vain with hope of secular and sinful tis world.

Jesus asked him, “Do you want to get well?” he replied, ““Sir, the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”

He did not know what he needed. But Lord Jesus knew what he needs. That is healing itself. He gave him that. Lord said to him, verse 9 say, “get up and take your mat and walk”. Healing is exactly what he needs.

When God comes to my life we can be healed and saved. Entering a pool is not answer. That is a vain hope. Only Lord can heal our life.

Under hot weather we can take some soda but thirsty is on. Only pure water can stop thirsty.

Worldly glory, worldly success, worldly pleasures do not resolve our existential thirst for life. Only Jesus Christ, our living water of life can make us peace and safe from all thirty of life.

Brothers and sisters in the Lord,

Only Lord is answer to our life. He made us and restored us.  Let us be in Him and enjoy peace and freedom provided by Him.

John’s Gospel 4:13-24,

“Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirty. Indeed, the water I give him becomes in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

Sungil Shin and Younggyun Shin are movie stars in century ago. One was chasing for pleasure from heavenly world while the other was chasing for pleasure from secular world. One left nothing but vain record. However, the other left many useful legacies. He was faithful Christian. He served God and church and people of God through good faith in his all life. He contributed all that he possessed to society. He confessed only God made all. He said, “All glory to be God only.”

John’s Gospel 7:37-38 say,

“On the last and greatest day of the Feast Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believe in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.”

God be with all of you, Amen.
