“Servant Who Is Standing On Holy Place” (Exodus 3:1-5)

May the grace and love of God be upon you who is listening to God’s voice today in this worship.

Carl Sagan was an astrophysicist in the world. He was born in New York. His parents immigrated from Ukraine. When he was 4 years old his parents took him to an Expo of Science. He was inspired by science, especially, universe and stars. When he was 13 years, he made a science club to research stars and plants and universe. He turned 15 years old in college due to eagerness for space and cosmos. He taught students in Cornell for lifelong.  One of his books is “Cosmos” that many people love as best book.

In the book he says, “The earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena.”  In this tiny spot humans are struggling for their interest. The more we research universe, the more we know how tiny we are. Whenever we see universe, we understand how big God is.

Today is a story of God calling Moses in burning bush. Greatest God encounters tiny human. Eternity meets time.

Let us read together Exodus 3:1-5

“Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the desert and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush, Moses saw that through the bush was on fire it did not burn up. So, Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight, why the bush does not burn up” When the Lord was that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.” “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”

People of Israel was persecuted by people of Egypt at the land of Egypt for longtime. Moses fled from there to Midian desert for survival. There he took his flock as shepherd of his father-in-law. He disappointed himself and was living in denying his dignity. One day God called him in burning bush. While caring for his flock he saw a strange sight. Moses saw that through the bush was on fire it did not burn up. When he went closer thereto check it up, God called him. God say, Moses! Moses! Moses answered, “Here I am!’

The first saying of God was that “Take off your sandals!” and the God let him see his people’s painful scene and gave him mission to save them from suffering and lead them to the Promised land.

The mission was to lead them from the land of idol to worshiping land, from secular land to holy land.

The start of this great mission was to take off sandals. Why did he have to take off his own sandals? Sandals were a tool to protect human body. It is symbol of human protection. Then slave did not wear sandals. If wanting to obey God, we must give up my tool to protect myself before God. We must take down everything we keep if we want to follow God.

God created us and master of my life. We belonged to Him. We must stand before Him with humility.

When we must take off our shoes, we can hear voice of God. In the time that we are hearing God’s voice, the land I am standing is changed to holy land. This is not more physical space but is spiritual space.

Brothers and sisters in the Lord,

As we take off our shoes, we must take off everything that we keep in front of God once we meet Him. And we must answer, “Here I am, Lord!”

When Moses come closer to the burning bush, he heard voice of God. Burning bush is miracle and mystery. This is not common but special. This is not normal but strange. But God works though this kind of special way to us. This strange thing of God used to come to us. And God come to us with this mysterious thing. God wants to meet us and to give mission for his work.

Apostle Paul listened a voice from God on the way to Damascus. Apostle Peter met Lord once he caught huge fishes from unexpected spot of water. Moses met God in burning bush.

God first came to them with mystery and miracle for calling them. When they obeyed God, they began new life of walking with God. There are not many experiences but perfect experiences.

The encounter with God made them different kind of life with God. Once God wants to make us great, we can be great. Life alone becomes life with God. What is great life? Life with God is great itself!

Exodus 3:10 says,

“So now, go, I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelite out of Egypt.”

It is not my ability but God’s hand to work done.
I hope your place in the worship can be the place of hearing the voice of God, your place of praying the place of hearing voice of God as well.

I hope that your place can be the place of burning bush of yours.

Psalm 62:5 says,

“Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from Him.”

Martin Luther has accomplished Reformation once he wrote Bible for translation in sermon. Martin Luther King led Human Right Movement once he preached his congregation.

One faithful lady nurtured her children in hard situations. He had to rely on God. She was desperate so she prayed every day. Her children well grew up all. She confesses God came to her life once she asked him for help.

Isaiah 43:1 say,

“But now, this is what the Lord says, he who created you, P Jacob, he who formed you, O, Israel; “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name, you are mine.”

God be with all of you, Amen.
