Sermon English Text AKFPC / July 19, 2026 Rev. Yongjin Park
“I Who Speak To You Am He” (John’s Gospel 4:15-26)
May the grace and love of God be upon you who is listening to God’s voice today in this worship.
Vietnam is a young country having almost half population of over 100 million under 30 years old. They love so much Korean culture and food like Achimhatsal rice drink, Chocopie, and Boogeo Samacho icecream. Almost half amounts of exporting oversea are selling in Vietnam yearly.
They think these foods as health and trendy for their lifestyle. Their culture is similar with Korean one focusing on inner mind deep relation like “Jeong” especially, Chopopie is regarded as survival food.
Even though everyday food that we eat, there is specific meaning or direction or philosophy of life in them.
Today Bible let us know eating drinking matter is related to being matter.
Let us read together John’s Gospel 4:15-18,
“The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.” He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.” “I have no husband,” she replied. Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband.”
Jesus Christ had to pass the land of Samaritan and stopped by a well of a village and met a woman coming to draw water then. Jesus asked her a water, but she did not want to do it. Then Jesus said that I can give you a water no drying everlasting. She asked to give it Jesus asked her to call her husband and come back but she replied that she had no husband. Jesus said the fact on her past mans and current situation. She was surprised and admitted Jesus to be Christ.
Worship is to come before God with our real life, our hidden secret, all scars, and all painful pasts. God asks us to come with real life of mine; we cannot cover our own life before God. We must show all our life and reality to Him who is creator and master of my life. Without true self we cannot be healed by touch of God through worship. True worshippers must come to Him with true being.
And she asked where true worship is done in Jerusalem or Samaria. Jesus answered her that new worship with sprit and truth without sacrifice more will come.
Verse 21 say,
“Jesus declared, “Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem”
She asked worship place that God wants but Jesus answered her time to worship that God loves. He said old worship has gone and new worship came, human centered worship gone and God centered worship come, tradition gone and spirit come, ceremony gone and meaning come, blood sacrifice gone and Word come.
Verse 23 say,
“Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are kind of worshippers the Father seeks.’
Jesus let her know that new era of worshipping God began already no by sacrifice but by spirit and truth. She asked surprisingly how it could be. That can be only by Christ. Jesus said that I am he.
Verse 25-26 say,
“The woman said, “I know that Messiah comes, he will explain everything to us.” Then Jesus declared, “I who speak to you am he.”
Then Jesus declared, “I who speak to you am he.”
The woman ran down to village and call people saying Christ is here. She said them explaining who He is. People came back with her and listened Jesus Christ and asked him to stay two days more for Word. And lots of people believed in Him as Christ letting them true worship and healing them.
Verse 41-42 say,
“And because of his Words many more became believers. They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”
Brothers and sisters in the Lord,
God wants to give all of us living water that everyone can drink. So, whoever wants to meet God must come worshipping. In worship God will be glorified and his people will be blessed. This is priceless gift for us.
But humans change this unconditional grace to conditional option. They change graceful love to sinful duty. So, we must come God with spirit and truth through gospel of Jesus Christ.
In Old Testament, God received worship through sacrifices. To forgive people must come to God with sacrifice in worship. But people missed love of God in it and excluded Each other for their own interest. God finally closed that kind of worship and opened new worship with spirit and truth. God wants to open all people in worship for forgiveness and blessing and salvation.
Jesus Christ has raised cross to open this graceful worship for salvation of all human being. So, we must come to God with spirit and truth.
Numbers 6:24-26 say,
“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lor turn his face toward you and give you peace.”
Peter knew this grace in Lord and Paul knew this wonderful grace in Lord as well.
One faithful lady grew up in family of Christian, but she did not fully feel grace of God. When she was matured, she started to study Word of God diligently and understood love of God in Christ Jesus. Her faith grew up finally. Whenever she worships, she is now happy to listen
Word of God because of true grace and true love from God.
In a song “Purest Praise” it says,
“Let us all become worshippers,
Let us worship the Lord completely in spirit and truth,
May the Lord be with us forever with us. And fill us with a fountain that heaven runs dry.”
John’s Gospel 4:24 say,
“God is spirit, and his worshippers must worship in spirit and in truth.”
God be with all of you, Amen.
