“My Church on This Rock” (Matthew’s Gospel 16:13-20)
May the grace and love of God be upon you who is listening to God’s voice today in this worship.
On 1878 Seo Sangyoon, a ginseng seller was seriously ill and Scotland missionaries, McIntire and Ross helped him to recover through a surgeon missionary Hunter. He became faithful believer later and joined in translating work to Korean language with missionaries.
On 1879 Luke’s Gospel and John’s Gospel were translated by Korean and in 1883 he entered his homeland Korea with 100 Korean Bibles, but he arrested immediately to put in jail. He could flee with the help of his relatives and went to a small town in the country, Sorae village.
He delivered gospel with 10 copies of Korean Bible. Almost of villagers became believers of Jesus Christ. That is the first Korean church in Korean history. Without work of missionary this church was built in land of Korea. We confess that church can be built on the Word. And our church, Austin Korean First Presbyterian Church was built on the Word as well.
All church is built on the Word, which is rock of faith.
Let us read together Matthew’s Gospel 16:16-19,
“Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
While Jesus Christ came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked to his disciples, “who do people say on me?” they replied, John, Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, or a prophet. Jesus asked again to them “what about you?” then Simon Peter answered, “You are Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Jesus was very pleased and blessed him and promised to build His church on the confession which is rock of faith.
Verse 18-19 say,
“And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you lose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
Paints of medieval era has used to describe Peter with key of heaven according to this verse of Bible.
Jesus promised everyone who confesses Jesus Christ as the Son of the living God to build His church on the rock of faith. The key to heaven is prayer that opens what he wants in God.
This person with faith and confession can bind and lose whatever they want. God listen to them and protect them in earth. This is church. Christ Jesus first introduced church in this verse of Bible.
Church is the passage of God to save all soul from sin and judgement. God calls us through His church, and the will of God has done through it as well.
Jesus Christ taught how to pray in Matthew’s Gospel 6, “the will of God will be done in earth as done in heaven.”’
Brothers and sisters in the Lord,
Where is the place that the will of God be done strongly? That is church! Church is only place where God be worshipped by worshipers and His will be done strongly.
Jesus Christ said to a woman in a village of Samaria about new worship of not blood but spirit.
John’s Gospel 4:23 say,
“Yet time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.”
We are in the worship of spirit not of blood as in the Old Testament era. We are glorifying God by this worship of Spirit that the woman really did seek. We are blessed to worship God through the new form of worship with truth and spirit which are Word and Spirit through blood of Jesus Christ.
John’s gospel 4:21 say,
“Jesus declared. “Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.”
We are worshipping God with Holy Spirit and this worship heal us and recover home and community and nation. Because God created all of us and He sovereign us with His mighty hand. True worship restores everything that He made.
If we want to be restored, we must worship with truth and Spirit.
18 years ago, 7 persons came to my house for worship, we worshipped God in Word and spirit. God received our worship and blessed through church. This church was built on the confession for God that Peter confessed before Jesus Christ. “You are Christ and the Son of the living God.” from that day we have not stopped prayers and worships during 18 years until today. We believe that the fire of Holy Spirit is still on us.
We are so thankful to God for this grateful church that God gave us for as our blessing from God.
Matthew’s Gospel 7:24-25 say,
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.”
Let us be true worshipper to worship God in truth and spirit every day.
