“Such Great Faith” (Matthew’s Gospel 8:5-13)

May the grace and love of God be upon you who is listening to God’s voice today in this worship.

A great earthquake happened last week in Venezuela and thousands of people were lost and houses and building were destroyed. More than 50,000 people were missing in the earthquake. Many nations are sending rescue teams to save lives from the debris of buildings to help.

There was doublet earthquake on Caribbean Plate and South American Plate of earth with swallow epicenter. It made bigger damage to them. It was the greatest earthquake in a century.

Ukraine and Iran and Lebanon and Gaza are all under war and great destruction from battles. Many infrastructures were damaging so, there looks no hope. But South Korea has been same situation half century ago. Korean War has destroyed almost of social infrastructure however people made it great chance to rebuild with faith to God and they made it eventually.
I hope that other nations can do as us too in faith of God, the master of all lives.

How much can we recover and heal is more important than how much we are destroyed.

Today Bible let us know love leading faith and faith leading grace.

Let us read together Matthew’s Gospel 8:6-10,

“Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed and in terrible suffering.” Jesus said to him, “I will go and heal him.”The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof, but just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, “Go.” and he goes; and that one, ‘Come and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this and he does it. When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, “I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.”

There was a gentile centurion, the military leader leading 100 soldiers. He came to Jesus asking his servant in suffering from paralyzed to heal. Jesus said to go for healing, but he answered, just say the word so his servant will be healed.
And he explained why he believed in as this to Jesus. After listening Jesus praised him as the greatest faith that among people in Israel could not be found.

Verse 8 say,

“The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof, but just say the word, and my servant will be healed.”

and verse 13 says,

“Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! It will be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at the very hour.”

It was surprising for the Lord to see such great faith in gentile.
How can the man believe in the nature and power of Lord Jesus Christ while Jew people did not know about?

People of Israel has been trying to have Jesus Christ come to their house for healing. But this gentile person understood that Word of God works with no matter what any place or any situation if the Word comes truly from the Lord.

This is the strength of outsiders to see things that insider or mainstream cannot see. He understood the nature of all authority through his own perspective as soldier. Order is real to act not just sound to listen.

So, Lord Jesus praised him to be great faith among all of people. This man with great faith focused the nature of Word of God while everyone focused the touch for healing.

This is like; this man runs by bike while others run by feet, this man rides by airplane while others ride by car.

It was same healing, but while people in Israel, in insider, hung on hand of Lord Jesus this man in gentile, in outsider, hung on Word itself. He exactly understood the nature of Word of God to make comes true. That is why Lord Jesus honored his faith.

One day Lord Jesus sent his disciples to proclaim gospel with healing power to heal and to drive out demons. And they came back to report they made healing and driving out by name of Jesus Christ.

Mark’s Gospel 6:12-13 say,

“They went our and preached that people should repent. They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.”

Among their reports they said to prohibit someone who healed sicks by name of Jesus Christ because he had not belonged to us. But Jesus said them not to ban such person whoever working by name of Jesus for gospel.

Mark’s Gospel 9:38-39 say,

“’Teacher’, said John, ‘we saw a man driving our demons in your name and we told him to stop, because he was not one of us.’ ‘Do not stop, Jesus said, no one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me.”

Brothers and sisters in the Lord,

Anyone who know the authority of name of God is working with God. So, whoever serving by name of our Lord Jesus Christ for gospel will be near the Lord.

Disciples could know the nature of Word of God through long training under Lord Jesus Christ. Power of Word comes from not touch but proclaim based on steadfast faith to God.

This is why his faith “Lord, just say word, he will be healed” is great!

And Lord Jesus as well said that gentiles will contribute to deliver gospel of salvation more than Jews, outsiders more than insiders. Because they see the nature of Word with their open eye to see work of salvation from God through Lord Jesus Christ.

Matthew’s Gospel 8:11-12 say,

“But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

This is like; the last will be first, and the first will be last.

We are weak now but in light of gospel we can be strong. This is promise under faith of God for us. We are now destroyed but as long as we are in God we can be recovered and healed to be better ever before.

Let us try to hold word of God. If we cannot be shaken in steadfast faith for God you will be greatest in power if the Lord Jesus Christ. You certainly will be first not last under grace of God our Lord.

Let us proclaim as this “Lord, just say word, it will be done!”
This is our blessing and our privilege as children of Almighty God in heaven. Our success as children of God is to have God again and Lord’s happiness is to have us again, to have back our mission feeding lambs of God.

I hope that we have this joy again in grace of heavenly Father.

A father served a church diligently, but his son did not honor his faith and left one he grew up long time. But when his father was weak as old he came back to his father and began to serve as his father did. When the father said “thanks” to his son because inheriting his faith to God.

John’s gospel 6:39 say,

One girl has heard first time in her life Word of God in worship at chapel when she was in a missionary high school in Korea. She gradually accepted Word of God and began to believe in Jesus Christ as her personal savior. After one year she came to a local church because she wanted to become Christians while others did not come. She became a great woman leader in all areas of church, denomination, and society. She confessed “I believed in Lord, and Lord trusts with me as well in my life.”

Matthew’s Gospel 8:13,

“Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! It will be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at the very hour.”

God be with all of you, Amen.
