“Love of Father” (Luke’s Gospel 15:18-24)
May the grace and love of God be upon you who is listening to God’s voice today in this worship.
The movie “In the name of father” is justice story based on real story happened on 1974 in England. A common young man “Gerry Conlon” was arrested as conviction of terror by police and his father was arrested as same conviction and both lives sentenced with other almost 10 peoples. Even though they requested innocence, all evidence pointed them guilty.
While they were in prison, father “Guiseppe Conlon died in there and 14 years later trumped-up charge was found, and his son “Garry” was released for free, and he published a book “Proved innocent Gerry Conlon of the story of Guildford Four” 0n 1990. His father “Giuseppe” did not give up trying his son released in jail. He did not see his son released but eventually his hope came true. His son remembered how much his father endeavored for son and he recorded it in his book.
All father loves their children as themselves and sacrifice for them as well if they can. It is blessing for everyone to have father in life.
Today is a story about lovely father that Lord Jesus let us know.
Let us read together Luke’s gospel 15:20-24,
“So, he got up and went to his father. “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. The son said to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.” “But the father said to his servants, “Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and it alive again; he was lost and is found. So, they began to celebrate.”
One day Lord Jesus Christ said three parables’ stories to show how much love of God big, a lost sheep, lost gold coin, and today is prodigal son story. One rich man had two sons, one of them left after having half of property that received from his father. But he lost all in few years and became poor and was about to die with hunger. He thought to return to his father then. When he reached home his father saw and filled with compassion and hugged him with kiss. He ordered servants to put on a robe, ring, and sandals even though the son asked him to accept himself as servant.
The father forgave what the son did and recovered all status as his son in family. Because he was very happy to have his son again from death.
For father it was important to have back his son alive. For son it was important to keep property. Father saw life while son saw success. lost son. The Word that Lord Jesus wants to teach means who God is for us. This is answer of Lord once his disciples asked him to let them know about God. Lord answered them with this parable story to have them easily understood.
Verse 24 say,
“For this son of mine was dead and it alive again; he was lost and is found. So, they began to celebrate.”
This is the exact mind of our heavenly Father to be eager for His children to come back again.
The best joy of father is to get his son back without lost or dead. The son was about to die. Father had him again alive. It is not matter for father to lose property, position, or health. These could be recovered later. But the life of son could not be recovered after totally lost.
Shame or failure can make son kill himself. These can make him not go father lifelong. It might be worst case for father not to see anymore his son alive or in life due to these dark things.
Thankfully the son did not forget the love of father and trusted him so, he returned to his son with love and trust. This is why the father was pleased so much.
This is why the father hugged and kissed his son coming back to home.
Verse 20 say,
“So, he got up and went to his father. “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.”
This is the point that Jesus emphasized. The mind of heavenly Father is this. He sees our being not our success, our soul not ability.
Whoever comes back to Father will be forgiven and comforted.
For parents children are all for their life. All happy things come from them, and this is big reason to survive in this hard world. If anyone who failed or sinned, comes back to Father, they will be accepted His son and healed and recovered in his grace. Our Father will put on robe, ring, and sandals with great love of God. Slave did not put on sandals then. Only son can be put on it. Father will do that for us as well because we are children.
John’s Gospel 1:12-13 say,
“Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.”
Brothers and sisters in the Lord,
The status of children of God comes from receiving and believing in His name of God. The decision and the choice make us to become the precise children of God.
Sin makes us to be in shame and disappointment. It puts us in despair and anger. So, it led us disconnect with human, world, even God.
Everything that blocks to go God is the work of evil spirit. Going toward God back with overcoming these things is our victory as children of God.
It is our blessing to win in war of thoughts for God.
When we come back to the altar of God, from all kinds of temptation, our heavenly father will put on robe, ring, and sandals for us. He will recover everything for us.
When Peter has dined Lord three times and went back with deep disappointment to old life fishing, Lord Jesus Christ came to him asking “do you still love me?” as the heart of father finding the lost son.
John’s gospel 21:15 say,
“When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”
Our success as children of God is to have God again and Lord’s happiness is to have us again, to have back our mission feeding lambs of God.
I hope that we have this joy again in grace of heavenly Father.
A father served a church diligently, but his son did not honor his faith and left one he grew up long time. But when his father was weak as old, he came back to his father and began to serve as his father did. When the father said “thanks” to his son because inheriting his faith to God.
John’s gospel 6:39 say,
“and this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day.”
