“The Holy Spirit Came Down On Us” (acts 2:1-8)

May the grace and love of God be upon you who is listening to God’s voice today in this worship.

Everyone has birthday, is celebrated and blessed. When is the birthday of church in the world? When was church born in this world? The church birthday is “Pentecostal Sunday” which has begun the first church in the world.

People of Israel kept three holidays, Passover, Pentecost, and Feast of Tabernacle that gathered all in Jerusalem to celebrate.

Disciples of Jesus Christ gathered to wait for what Jesus promised to them before his ascension. Jesus Christ walked with them for 40 days after crucifixion and resurrection.

And he asked them not to leave where they received calling from God, Jerusalem and wait for Holy Spirit which is Spirit of God.

They followed what their Lord asked sincerely, gathered to wait for the Sprit with prayer and Word. On the day of Pentecost 120 people gathered at one place. Suddenly Holy Spirit came down on them with sound of wind and tongue of fire and other tongues.

This is the moment of beginning church in the world. This is the birthday of all churches on earth.

Let us read together Acts 1:1-4,

“When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”

They were amazed to see what happened to them. And others were amazed as well when they spoke other languages, making people all understand. Even though they did not learn other languages, their tongues made others understand what they said. This is only event in human history after Tower of Babel. All people could understand what they said in their native languages.

When people gathered near them, Peter proclaimed gospel of Jesus Christ and asked them repentance for their sins. Many people began to repent their own sins after listening to the sermon. And they were baptized then as sign of being forgiven by blood of Jesus Christ. Then Holy Spirit was poured down on them as well.

The first sign of Holy Spirit is repentance. If there is repentance, it is sure of Spirit of God.

Verse 37-38 say,

“When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other Apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every of you, In the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

When we listen Word of God, repent our sin, baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit comes on us. And those with Holy Sprit bear fruits of Holy Spirit naturally,

Galatians 5:22-23 say,

“But the fruits of the Sprit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”

We are bearing these great fruits once Holy Spirt is in us.

We can go through our life goal with these wonderful fruits of the Sprit.

And God gives us gifts of Holy Spirt as well for helping us accomplish our calling effectively.

I Corinthians 12:8-10 say,

“To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to others the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit. to other faith by the same Sprit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues and to still another the interpretation of tongues.”

God give us these kinds of wonderful gifts to work for His glory in the life. Holy Spirit is the spirit to help us work for God.

Brothers and sisters in the Lord,

Let us be eager to receive Holy Spirit, so we can walk with Him in our life.

There are baptism and fullness of Holy Spirit in our faith life. Holy Spirit baptism is the one time once we first accept Jesus Christ as my Lord. And Holy Spirit fullness is ongoing grace recharging in us. Through fullness of Holy Spirit, we can walk with God without burn out in our life.

So, Holy Spirit helps us go our faithful way of life in this hard world.

Ephesians 5:18 say, “be filled with the Sprit”

How can we fill the Spirit again in us? It is by returning to grace of God. How can we return to Him? It is by praise and prayer. The place and moment that praise and prayer happens is worship. Whenever we are to worship, Holy Spirt is with us as well in healing and restoring us.

In Acts 19, Apostle Paul met some people who knew Word of God but did not know about Jesus Christ and Holy Spirit. When he taught them with Word, they repent and baptized, and Holy Spirt poured on them as well as the first church did.

Acts 19:5-7 say,

“On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of Lord Jesus, When Paul placed his hands on them the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. There were about twelves men in all.”

All great thing of God is in us through worship and praise through Holy Spirit. Let us fill with Holy Spirit every day. Salvation is to defeat sin and to fill with the Spirt. And God will restore us to be fullness of the image of God.

One hundred years ago in a revival service in a city of Korea, an elder confessed his personal sin after listening to Word, all people were surprised by his repent. More people joined in the relay of confessing their secret sins. This is the start of Great Awakening Movement in history.
Acts 19:20 say,

“in this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power.”

God be with all of you, Amen.
