“Faith Family, Gospel Home” (II Timothy 1:1-9)

May the grace and love of God be upon you who is listening to God’s voice today in this worship.

A Song “Home Sweet Home” is composed by Howard Payne. He had no family in his life while living in various nations with various jobs. He died lonely in Africa without family leaving eagerness for sweet home. This song was sung by many people who were eager to have sweet home especially, many soldiers of both side during The Civil War. President Lincoln was one of fan of his song in White House.

When his body came back to New York port 1883 after 31 years, a great number of people gathered to welcome his funeral. President Arthor was one of them.  “Mid pleasure and palaces through we may roam. Be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home. Home, home, sweet home, there’s no place like home, there’s no place like home.”

We learn how much precise my home from a lone man who was eager to have a sweet home. Home is blessing given from God. Home is the most comfortable place in the world. And home is a passage to come to life and to practice love. Faith home is wonderful blessing as well.

Today Bible let us know that faith family is blessed home.

Let us read together II Timothy 1:5-8,

“I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now in you also. For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power of love and of self-discipline. So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God.”

Apostle Paul had not married and no family while doing mission work. But he had great disciples like Timothy. He loved so much of them especially, Timothy as his son.

Timothy has good parents and leaned Hellenism culture from father, and Jews tradition from mother. He was a perfect leader to work in Roman world. Paul saw wonderful faith in Timothy life. And he understood that was formed in his family. He encouraged Tim to keep the great faith tradition that was inherited by grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice.

Verse 5 says,

“I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now in you also.”

Timothy became a great leader of early churches with strong faith that received from his family faith tradition.

All people are influenced by their family tradition in home. What to think and what to feel are formed by what to experience. Generally, people keep going to church if they are going to church with their parents at a young age. And they have good memories and positive images of church and faith families. This might lead them to come to church again after growing up later.

Baby learns feeling, child learns habits, and youth learns thoughts. So, in what kind of family they grow up might lead their choice in life.

We must provide our children with comfortable and faithful homes in a family environment.

When I was ministering on new believers who were returning to church after long time break, I found that many have grown up in faith families in their young ages with faithful parents. Most of them were those who had worship experiences in home and school.

Worship community might make people to contact with God and equip them to be worshipper. The greatest teacher of faith is worship community itself. Worshipping home and worshipping church are both leading people to go to God.

Mother of Moses Jochebed was putting her baby on a papyrus basket in river to save him from king’s hand. And she took care of him as babysitter according to order of princess of the king. She nurtured her son with love and Word of God, so he became great servant of God to save his people from suffering.

Issac was offered by his father Abraham who obeyed fully to God. He learned God from his father and became a great leader of this tribe in ancient time.

Brothers and sisters in the Lord,

Faith home is blessing that God has given us as life passage. Let us have time to talk with your children. Dialogue at home might lead your children to grow to be leader future. Through talking with father and mother they have great chance to learn survival wisdom in life.

They can live more wiser or healthier through these kinds of faith and wisdom that they are learned at home. Worship with their parents will make them strengthen in life. This deep faithful wisdom of life will lead them to overcome any obstacles in generation, culture, or language.

A Musician AKMU, a boy and a girl are children of Korean missionary in working on Mongolia. They had to live in a foreign land without friends. Their parents provided them with homeschooling due to lack of economic and cultural resources. Both liked music and there were only electric piano and guitar for worship service. They practiced at home those instruments they enjoyed with and became wonderful music duet singers. They became winners later in K Pop music contest in Korea. Recent they composed a famous song “Paradise of Rumor” that many people love.

Faithful home makes to be mature life to love others and themselves as well.

Warm food and warm love are in home. If there is a more, grace of God is the perfect place to live. God creates us through family. Home is the sweetest place to taste grace of God and love of family. This is gift of God given us who live in hard world. Let us keep this wonderful place with love and faith.

Timothy 1:13-14 says,

“What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you, guard with the help of the Holy Spirit who live in us.”

Let us keep this beautiful home in God with love and faith steadfastly.

God be with all of you, Amen.
