“In Breaking My Treasure Perfume” (John’s Gospel 12:1-11)
May the grace and love of God be upon you who is listening to God’s voice today in this worship.
Ben Wisner is the coach of Mammoth Team of snowboard and mento of Gaon Choi and Chloe Kim, gold medalists of Olympic games.
Gaon Choi, the gold medalist has hung her medal around her coach’s neck, Ben Wisner right after winner ceremony last week in Milano Italy. It was her expression to her mento who had taught her since she was 12 years old.
She wrote a thankful note as well to him in social media as “You recognized me when nobody did not know me. You have been with me always. You are my teacher, mento, coach Ben. She gave great thanks to him. It is wonderful relationship between mento and mentee. We can see that great teachers make great followers.
Today Bible let us know one life’s great love to the Lord’
Let us read together John’s Gospel 12:3-8,
“Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, “Why wasn’t this perfume sold, and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year wages.” He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself with what was put into it.
“Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”
Before arrested, Jesus Christ visited house of Lazarus near Jerusalem and was great banquet for the Lord and many people gathered to attend the feast in including leaders of people who wanted to kill Jesus and Lazarus. Maria, sister of Lazarus broke expensive perfume and poured it on Jesus as love to the Lord. Judas, one of Jesus’ disciples scolded her due to spend waste.
Jesus praised her due to her love to the Lord. Jesus said, she did prepare for Lord’s burial.
Verse 7-8 say,
“Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”
Brothers and sisters in the Lord,
Let us keep our faith only to our Lord, Jesus Christ. Don’t see any other voice from world. When we keep serving our Lord, there might be obstacles such as critics or blame or jealousy. However, if our service is true, the great fruit will be coming in the Lord.
If our love is true, there will not be hesitation, it will continue until we are getting goal.
When parents nurture their children, they do not stop feeding them. Because of great love. Happiness of children is happiness of parents. Our love to the Lord is same as well. We do not stop our love and thanks.
True love is to break our perfume as Maria did. Even though the world betrayed our Lord to cross, people as Maria and Lazarus loved with their heart, so their faith made great fruit of faith in the world.
Love does not belong to the world but belonged to God.
John’s gospel 22:24-25 say,
“I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.”
True love produces true life.
Apostle Paul kept beside the Lord, and he made wonderful fruit of faith in the world to invite great number of people to salvation.
One faithful man kept serving his congregation from young ages and did not leave his position for several decades. All the people in his town respected him as true believers and he invited many souls to the Lord with his steadfast service.
Daniel 12:3 say,
“Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many of righteousness. Like the star ever and ever.”
God will be all of you, Amen.
