“One Who Make People Turn To Lord” (Luke’s Gospel 1:13-19)

May the grace and love of God be upon you who is listening to God’s voice today in this worship.

Cheol Lee, in his book “The US-China Tariff War” said this war between superpower nations is substantially bringing a kind of attrition warfare. Russia and Ukraine war is one case; the other is China and Japan possible war. US wants not to be involved in any war but wants competitors nations exhaust their resources to defeat opponent. That is nature of all nations that want to win historically.

He said, other nations as South Korea must keep their own with wisdom based on clear facts not to leaning upon certain side. Conspiracy theory or conspiracy from fear can be used as pray by attrition warfare in midst of unstable international paradigm change.

It must keep caution does not fall into extremism and must keep reasonable judgement. If they miss it, they might lose in war that they don’t expect.

Today Bible introduces a servant of God making people bring back to God from wrong direction of life. He is baptismal John.

Let us read together Luke’s Gospel 1:15-17,

“For he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from birth. Many of the people of Israel will he bring back to the Lord their God. And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedience to the wisdom of the righteous, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

The baptismal John was a prophet who proclaimed message from God in the wilderness right before Jesus Christ begins his ministry. People was in indifference long time to seek will of God amid secular worlds. They leaned upon worldly issues every day and immersed deeply conflicts and lust. That was sinful life.

John the prophet proclaimed, “Repent it, kingdom of God is near!” many surprised and listened his voice and turn their heart back to God. So that Jesus can plant everlasting seed in their soft heart that John prepared for.

This was like a famer digs and fritters solid soil before planting seed in spring. That was like a sudden voice from heaven amid secular sounds prevailing.

When they listened voice from God, they recognized their problems come from their own not from others. Why do people criticize others? They want unconsciously to cover their own faults.

Because of their own sin they are eager to find sins of others to cover their own. That is evidence of that all human is sinner. Jesus said, “why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?”

This is humans’ self-contradiction and lust and sin.

John pointed to that and asked them to turn from that sin with strong words.

True repentance needs exact recognition based on reality not pretense. If doctor does not diagnose exact disease, he cannot recover to health or save life.

John in wilderness, made people confront their own reality of soul, sinful nature and turn their heart to their Lord God through his powerful message.

Verse 17 say,

“And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedience to the wisdom of the righteous, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

All issues from personal, community, or national level comes as substantially same matter from sin.

Eventually sin and lust make human being point others to be sinner not to see their own.

Brothers and sisters in the Lord,

Why did Jesus Christ come down this world?

He knew that we humans do not have any ability to overcome this sin by our own ability. We all need Jesus Christ saving from sin to eternal life.

Jesus Christ overcame sin by his everlasting love and sacrifice to save all of us.

Children of God is those who follow the way of our Lord Jesus Christ listening voice of God. We turn all matters on our own not to others. We find reasons from our own and serve our own to will of God.

Verse 16 say,

“Many of the people of Israel will he bring back to the Lord their God.

We are serving God through bringing back heart of people to God our faithful God. It is our mission.

In Matthew’s Gospel 4:4, Jesus say,

“It is written, Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’

A Korean poet, Dojin Park in one century ago found truth from Bible while seeking truth from other religions and teachings. He confessed that only Jesus Christ is perfect answer to matter of life.

John’s Gospel 10:9 say,

“I am gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture.”

God be with all of you, Amen.
