“One Body One Family In Christ” (I Corinthians 11:26-34)
May the grace and love of God be upon you who is listening to God’s voice today in this worship.
When I was in ministering in Korea. I remember one lady who was new in church and was pregnant. One old lady in church invited her to church. One day communion service was in worship service. She received a cup to drink it. Old member talked to her that unbaptized cannot be received. It made her hurt. She did not have enough knowledge about holy ceremony.
A pastor visited North Korea to see his family as humanitarian visit once South and North governments has agreed with together to exchange visits for divided families . He reported the first communion service of his life at North Korea. It was amazing for him to have Holy Ceremony with people of North Korea. It was so special to have together holy communion in regime of Communist. This became a symbol to unify as one in Christ.
What is Holy Communion? It is difference and identity of saints from world.
Let us read together I Corinthians 11:26-29,
“For whenever you eat the bread or drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup pf the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. A man ought to examine himself before he eats the bread and drinks of the cup.”
First, this means Lord’s body and blood shed for our salvation. His sacrifice made us save. We can glorify Lord through this Holy Communion once we partake bread and wine, a symbol of body and blood of Jesus Christ.
Second, this means we are one in Christ as children of God. We have same blood of Chirt spiritually even though we are called from various backgrounds. Through this Holy Communion we practice our spiritual identity as one family from loving God.
Third, this means heavenly banquet that we will be with our Lord in heaven later. This physical ceremony will be completed in heave as spiritual meal with our savior, triune God.
Whenever we join in this Holy ceremony, we practice our identity as children of God and saints in heaven.
Church had three holy things: Word pulpit, Holy Communion, and Baptism. Through these three things we can see our Lord, our God in life. Through this spiritual symbol that we have in life we walk with God our Lord.
Then, what is unworthy manner in Holy Communion?
First moral and personal sin. If somebody partakes in this holy ceremony with sinful mind or behaves, this can be sin against order of the Lord who wants us to be clean from all sin.
Second, spiritual and communal sin. If somebody join in Holy Communion with unforgiving mind and dividing heart against brothers and sisters in body of Christ, it can be sin against Lord.
So, we must be clean and holy once we receive and join in holy ceremony to keep our holy life from sin.
When we must keep our Oneness as children of God in spiritually.
Split of world become heal in church, body of Christ. Uncleanness in world is changed to clean in Church. Because Lord makes all sinful and unclean being holy and clean by His blood. This is blessing that church, body of Christ has.
The Corinthians church received discipline by Lord because of their split in their own church family spiritually.
Verse 20-24 say,
“When you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat, for as you eat of you goes ahead without waiting for anybody else, one remains hungry, another gets drunk. Don’t you have come home to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you for this? Certainly not! For I received from the Lord what I also passed into you. The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is body, which is for you, do this in remembrance of me.”
The church in Corinthians was built in a city of idols and most of them had not enough knowledge on Word. There were various people in church as masters and salves, rich and poor. And when they eat in church, they gathered several groups according to economic background. This could make it split into church.
Apostle Paul scolded them to eat together and overcome world value in church to follow Word of God.
Verse 33 say,
“So, then my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for each other.”
Church overcome world when we keep order from loving God and refusing world. World ask us to divide, but God ask us to unity. Making us divided is sin while making us united is grace and blessing despite differences.
According to a report of a leaders, leaders of China from various denominations 50 years ago, gathered one place to seek unity under persecution of Communist regime. They could not find the agreement of one church due to their differences. They had to leave without any good confession. One leader suggested them to have Holy Communion before leaving. They agreed to have Last Supper according to direction of Jesus Christ.
When they have Holy Communion, all people gathered there wept together, Holy Spirit touched them, and they confessed that they are all called to be One body of Christ before leaving.
One century ago, one church in Seoul split into two, one was high officials’ people, the other is lower class people. But after 50 years they sat together to had worship together confessing one body of Christ with repentance and become great church to deliver gospel of Jesus Christ with mission.
All church is having one body of Christ by Holy Communion once they want to confess one in God. Let us remember that we are one in Christ.
Verse 26 says again,
“For whenever you eat the bread or drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.”
