Sermon English Text AKFPC / September 28, 2025 Rev. Yongjin Park
“Go And Do Likewise” (Luke’s Gospel 10:29-37)
May the grace and love of God be upon you who is listening to God’s voice today in this worship.
Last week there has been for the funeral service of Chalie Kirk who was killed while speaking in political event. His wife Erika Kirk said in the service to forgive the young man who shot to his husband. Many people were moved by her forgiving remark. That is what God pleases. And Jimmy Kimmel, the host of the talk show of ABC broadcasting company said sorry to Kirk’s family on his unthoughtful word while speaking in his talk show. Many people were moved by this polite response as well.
One forgives; the other apologizes. This means this society is still healthy and has resilience. Everywhere there are various people who have various opinions and different thoughts. So, there are conflicts as well. However, violent as terror or shooting cannot be accepted. It is evil to take any life violently. All issues must be solved by nonviolent ways such as dialogue or negotiation.
Violence brings another violence. This is not solution but problem. Hatred multiples more hatred. This is what God does not pleases. Only love can resolve this evil thing. Through loving neighbors, all problems can be resolved. This is what Bible teaches us.
In today Bible Jesus Christ teaches us again how to love and what to love.
Let us read together Luke’s Gospel 10:33-37,
“But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. “Look after him,’ he said, and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expenses you may have. “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.””
One day an expert in the Law came to Jesus Christ questioning as this “Teacher, what must do I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus replied “What is written in the Law? What do you read it?” the man answered, “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind and love your neighbor as yourself.”
Jesus replied, “you have answered correctly, do this and you will live.” but the man wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” in reply Jesus said to him a story about good Samaritan to save a pity one.
One man was dying alone due to hit by robbers while traveling. And a priest and a levy have passed by him left because they were afraid. But a Samaritan saved him with love in providing care and money.
Jesus asked the man “Which of three do you think was his neighbor? He answered, “the one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”
The expert in the Law did know how to keep the law but did not know what to keep. He had to know who God is. God is love. God pleases whom love others. Knowing heart of God is more important than keeping regulations of God.
Wishing eternal life is blissful he had to know the exact meaning of loving God and loving neighbors. Why we need the law of God? That needs to love God and neighbors. we can say about God once we can love others.
The way of Loving God is taking place in worship service and the way of loving neighbor is taking place in neighbor love. The reason that Jesus Christ raised up the cross was to love sinners in giving His body and life as sacrifice with pity on them. Healing patients and forgiving sinners of him came from great love of God.
This is why all human being loves Christ and worship God. So, children of Lord who worship God must love neighbors as ourselves.
The expert in the Law seemed to think of neighbors in two kinds who can be loved or cannot be loved. So, he asked again who my neighbor is.
Jesus gave him a parable story to clarify what God love and how we love and whom we love. After giving whole story, Jesus asked him again who is his neighbor? He answered, “The one who pity on him.” Jesus asked him, “Go and do likewise.”
It is clear for us to love others. Nowhere is any discrimination in love of God. If we have the image of God, we must love others according to the Word of God. This is our mission to follow and the reason to do.
Brothers and sisters in the Lord,
This is the clear way to get eternal life and the way that we live. Loving God and loving neighbor is our blessing to inherit the eternal life. Saints are those who get eternal life through loving neighbors to change this world new and to overcome death power and through loving God to worship and to glorify Him as Creator and Redeemer.
If someone say love by words but do violent by hand, it might be false gospel. Evil spirit wants to insert hatred into our mind to make slave of evil one. But Spirt of God wants to give peace and love into our heart.
Battle of saints does not belong to secular realm but belonged to spiritual realm. Our battle is not toward physical objects or certain people but is toward the way or methodology of doing.
Lewd, untruth, hatred, or violent are coming from sin not from grace. These things cannot be worked with God.
Romans 8:6 say,
“The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace.”
Let us love God and love your neighbors as yourself. Let us worship God your Lord and love others according to the Word of God.
Jesus said to Peter “put your sword back in its place, for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.” when he cut off one ear of one man who came to catch Jesus.”
Loving is not easy work but the must work. Only through love we can accomplish our mission for the kingdom of God to reign all creation and this world.
James 1:20 say,
“for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.”
John Newton was a sinner who has been trading salves but after repenting he served others with love of God in rest of his life as pastor delivering gospel. He left a great hymn, “Amazing grace how sweet the sound!” That became the best song of Christians in the world.
I John 3:18-19 say,
“Dear children. Let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence.”
God be with all of you, Amen.
