Sermon English Text AKFPC / September 7, 2025 Rev. Yongjin Park
“Chose What He Could Do Best” (I Samuel 17:34-40)
May the grace and love of God be upon you who is listening to God’s voice today in this worship.
In a book “Memories of Joseon” written by Sherwood Hall, a missionary he described his mother, Rosetta Hall as wonderful sacrificial missionary to serve people of Joseon. She was born in New York and became surgical doctor after studying a woman medical school in Pennsylvania. She entered Korea 0n 1890 with his husband, doctor and gave one son and a daughter.
But she lost husband and daughter due to disease in few years there. But she kept her mission with her son, Sherwood who later became doctor and worked with his mother to serve people of Korea inherited from his parents.
She loved Korea in serving patients and woman through raising woman doctors. She made the first woman doctor in Korea, Esther Lee. And her medical center and school became medical school of Korea University now.
In her son’s book, there is a symbolic story on her mother as surgical doctor. One day a girl came to her hospital for treatment. Her one hand got burnt. Rosetta took off her own skin, tiny part to heal the patient and more people to join in doing that so that the girl’s hand could be healed. More than 30 people joined in because of her love.
God uses us through what we can do best to accomplish His work. He does not through what we cannot do. Let us read together I Samul 17;34-37,
“But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Phillistine will be like one of them, because he has defiled the armies of the living God. The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine. Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you.”
There was a battle between Israel and Palestine at Ela Velley. Goliath from Palestine army had been provoking army of Israel for 40 days but nobody wanted to come out for fighting with him. Because he looked great and was a strong warrior.
David was sent by his father to see his two brothers who were there as soldiers. And when he heard Goliath's voice, he was very angry and wanted to come out fighting with him. But he looked so weak to fight the warrior. King Saul called him and asked how he could fight with the warrior. David firmly answered he can defeat it.
King wanted to give him armor and helmet and sword, but David gave up due to being unused and heavy to him. Instead, he chose five stones from creek and swing to fight.
He has chosen what he can do best. It was wonderful choice, and it made him survive and defeat his enemy, huge obstacle in his life.
He said, he has been fighting lions and bears to keep his sheep for long time. He was shepherd to keep flock nights and days. The beasts were stronger than humans. So, he had to exercise his fighting skills to defeat them by swinging and stones and speed.
This fighting skill to keep sheep became later to save his people in battlefield. He focused only on doing his own mission by ability of what he can do well, not by of what he cannot do. He chose stone and swing not sword and armor helmet.
If David wanted to get recognition from king or people, there he would have worn kings’ armor and he would have been killed by Goliath due to the warrior’s power.
But he has not seen human’s award. He has seen only his mission from God. Because of his heart he got victory.
Verse 39 say,
“David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them. ‘I cannot go in these,” he said to Saul, “because I am not used to them.” So, he took them off.”
Brothers and sisters in the Lord!
Let us focus on our own mission not people’s recognition. Even though other’s skill or strength looks great and effective, because of some differences, it could not fit with us. Everyone has various backgrounds and direction so that the results also vary. Let us try to do what we can do well in various ways.
The best thing David has chosen is to choose what he can do best.
One medical school student was struggling with training. But he found some inconvenient things from surgical equipment. He thought that it could be improved, the surgery would be successful rather than ever. He gave up his study and built a company to make surgical tools and his business became successful and saved many patients.
In Numbers, Aaron and Hull held Moses’s arms to help prayer while Joshua fought with Amalekite. Imagine if Aaron and Hull were fighting instead of Joshua they might have been defeated by their enemy.
Paul and Barnabas were planting churches while Peter and James were nurturing churches. But imagine if their role had been exchanged with each other, there might be many confusions among churches.
God used them according to their gifts. We, children of God are the expert to praise, worship, pray, and serve in loving God and neighbors. Let us do diligently what you can do well. God pleases us working by this. And God is completing His plan through our faith and serve.
I Peter 1:10 say,
“Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never fall.”
One man was eager to join church choir but his ability to sing was not enough. He changed his role from singing to serving other members by preparation and support on exercise and performance. All members were satisfied and became later elder of that church because of his great service on congregation and their service for God.
Romans 15:2 say,
“Each of us should please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.”
God be with all of you, Amen.
