“Magna Carta Of Love” (Matthew’s Gospel 5:38-48)

May the grace and love of God be upon you who is listening to God’s voice today in this worship.

Tongil rice varieties was wonderful tool to harvest three times in 1970’s South Korea. It was harvested in rare water conditions. From this rice varieties Korea population could be self-sufficient of food.

Nowadays this Tongil rice kind is spreading in land of Africa surprisingly. Africa has suffered long hunger problems. There are many hungers in the land due to lack of soil conditions to harvest.

Some companies and department of South Korea have been supporting many nations in Africa to provide Tongil rice.

Varieties to help escaping vast hunger matter of them.

Many nations there must buy grains as food because they cannot be self-sufficient of food matter. So rich nations in Europe and America are selling food as deals of trading natural resources by cheaper one. It can be a kind of resource exploitation.

But only Korea provides food technology and rice seeds as free because they had experienced same suffering and similar help. It can be resource sharing.

People of Korea traditionally struggled with food due to hard nature conditions such as mountains and rock. Buy they has Succeed rice agriculture to get food from aftercrop after learning Song dynasty in China 5 hindered years ago.

Rice agriculture needs lots of human labor so naturally they have been sharing labor with neighbors. So, there is a term as this: “save human first whatever happens.” it means life of human is priority for labor sharing.

This is similar with Bible teaching to love others.

Let us read today Matthew’s Gospel 5:39-44,

“But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.

And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemies.’ But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,”

Matthew’s Gospel chapter 5-7 is called as Sermon on the Mount. Ghandi who was hero of India independence said this chapter of Bible as “The Magna Carta of Love for all human being”

He got insight from this Jesus’ great teaching and practiced

It led his movement of independence for mother country India from England with nonviolence and not resistance. He has succeeded his work finally.

In the 1950s, Martin Luther King adopted this methodology on the Civil Right Movement that he led.

It is very difficult to follow that “if someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.

We can think it can be foolish once we do this.

But brothers and sisters in our Lord,

This is teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ, he says to us, become foolish so Lord will restore us all. When we obey him, he will take care of us all.

So, follow him and his teaching eagerly.

We can do as heart of God not heart of human. Because we have in us heart of God, power of God will work in us.

Verse 46-47 sys,

“If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that?

And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?”

God is only perfect so we can be perfect through obeying him.

Let us try to be done for the will of God in earth as the will of God is done in heaven.

What is the will of God? Hate and anger is not his will, forgiveness and love are only the will of God. Revenge brings revenge. War does war. There is no end in this sinful way.

The sinful nature of humans tends to lead us to evil nature to eliminate others.

Ther is an old Korean term “do not attack other when you nurture children for protect them from any kind of revenges.”

The teaching of our Lod Jesus Christ is only truth.

Do not focus on worldly voice to have or attack others for yourself. Instead, focus on Lord’s voice to love and forgive them. This is the way of Lord protecting our precious life from the work of evil spirit and evil nature to destroy.

Why Romeo and Juliet in story of Shakespear died? Because of long and deep hate and revenge between two families in one village. After losing precious two of their children, they had reconciliation finally.

Let us listen to today’s His voice to love and forgive your enemies. This is His way of saving and to protect and to bless us.

Verse 48 say,

“Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

God be with all of you, Amen.
