“I Have Seen Your Tears” (II Kings 20:1-11)
May the grace and love of God be upon you who is listening to God’s voice today in this worship.
In Korea bill are several figures as General Lee Sunshin, King Sejong, Scholar Lee Hwang, Scholar Lee Ee, and woman painter Shinsaimdang. They are all historical figures who contributed greatly to the people and nation of Korea.
And two of them are family. Lee Ee is son of Shinsaimdang. Lee Ee was great scholar and secretary of state to lead the nation with wonderful vision based on perfect reality always. He won 9 times of state civil service examination. The first one of winning was at the age of 13.
He suggested standard tax system to stabilize social system and building up the military of one hundred thousand soldier to prepare for invasion of Japan. His idea was denied but was as expected in ten years. He is like Galileo in Korea.
His mother Shinsaimdang was a smart woman and nurtured his son, Lee Ee to be great scholar. She taught him as cultured person. but his age of 16, his mother passed away. Lee Ee was chocked from it and became a Buddhist monk in a while.
He kept asking on life and death of human. But senior monks did not give him satisficed answers. He did not get enough answers from there. He gave up trying to get answers from human existence. He returned from monk life and concentrated on national administration for people and their welfare as bureaucrat. And he became a wonderful visionary to see future.
Today is a story about a person who knew that nobody could fill with life matter but only God can do it. He was King Hezekiah and he was with great prayer answers.
Let us read together II King 20:8-11,
“Hezekiah had asked Isaiah, “What will be sign that the Lord will heal me and that I will go up to the temple of the Lord on the third day from now?” Isaiah answered, “This is the Lord’s sign to you that the Lord will do what he has promised: Shall the shadow go forward ten steps, or shall it go back ten steps?” “It is a simple matter for the shadow to go forward ten steps,” said Hezekiah. “Rather, have it go back ten steps.” Then the prophet Isaiah called upon the Lord, and the Lord made the shadow go back the ten steps it had gone down on the stairway of Ahaz.”
When Hezekiah became king of Judah, his nation was so weak and in front of invasion of great nation Assyria. North nation, Israel was occupied by Assyria before few years ago. Next turn was on his nation.
When the army of Assyria came and confined Jerusalem and threatened them, Hezekiah had no power to save his nation and people. He entered in temple of God and prayed and wept to God bitterly. God answered him with his Almighty hand killing enemy army, 180,000 soldiers in one night. His nation was saved from that miracle.
His prayer was powerful and God loved him with His great hand. Later he was about to die due to serious illness. Prophet Isaiah visited him to send message of God to notice his death. Once he listened the message, he turned his face to wall and prayed and wept to God bitterly again. God returned his will and permitted him 15 years more of life.
When Isaiah delivered revised message of God, he asked Him a sign of God.
Verse 9-11 say,
“Isaiah answered, “This is the Lord’s sign to you that the Lord will do what he has promised: Shall the shadow go forward ten steps, or shall it go back ten steps?” “It is a simple matter for the shadow to go forward ten steps,” said Hezekiah. “Rather, have it go back ten steps.” Then the prophet Isaiah called upon the Lord, and the Lord made the shadow go back the ten steps it had gone down on the stairway of Ahaz.”
King Sejong ordered Jang Youngsil to make a sun clock “Anbuilgi: in 1434 with shadow of sun under sunshine. And water clock “Jakeokru” was made as well to check time in case of not sunshine.
In era of king Ahaz, the sun clock was made with same system of shadow. When Hezekiah asked for a sign to heal his deadly ill. God suggest him to choose shadow of the sun clock go forward ten steps or go back ten steps. He has chosen to go back ten steps instead of going forward ten steps.
God made the shadow go back ten steps as he asked. He loved him very much. God did hold order of nature according to his will for answer to his servant, Hezekiah.
In book of Joshua, there was a miracle of stopping sun in a while during battle with Amorites army for army of Israel. But it was just stop of sun not going back of sun.
In book of Exodus, there was a miracle of separating water of Red Sea for Moses and his people.
In book of Judges, there was a miracle of wetting only cotton in yard for Gideon.
But this miracle was to go back sun for His lovely servant, Hezekiah. He headed and lived 15 years later. He was grateful believer with strong answers of God.
Verse 2-3 say,
“Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord,
“Remember, O Lord, how I have walked before you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion and have done what is good in your eyes.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly.”
He prayed before God not as king but as a child of God in front of his death. Nothing is useful before God, Creator and Lord of all life. When we begin to pray, evil spirit begins to worry and God
Begins focusing on us. When the children of God are praying with do or die, God listen and be close to us.
Let us begin to pray to God when we meet difficulties and risks. God will come close to hear us. Because God is good and sincere.
If we do not pray nothing will come to us.
Priest Samuel said that he would not sin no praying,
Samuel 12:23 say,
“As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the
Brothers and sisters in the Lord,
Lord by failing to pray for you. And I will teach you the way that is good and right.”
We, children of God can accomplish all with prayer. Prayer is our power and passage to accomplish the work of God.
Jesus Christ was praying every day. David and John were praying always for work of God. Everyday prayer is our breath of spirit and work of Holy Spirit in us.
One faithful lady lost his child by serious ill. She was busy to find way of saving her loved one. But the child left her. She was deeply disappointed and her faith became weaker. The second child was about to die again. She began to pray instead of saving her child. She prayed Bitterly to God for saving her child. The child was healed eventually. She confessed that “only God can save life and be perfect answer to all life.”
Jeremiah 33:2-3 say,
“This is what the Lord says, he who made the earth, the Lord who formed it and established it, the Lord is his name: ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.”
God be with all of you, Amen.
