“Through The Righteous” (Matthew’s Gospel 1:18-25)
May the grace and love of God be upon you who is listening to God’s voice today in this worship.
Ta Hyung Kim, in his recent book, “Why are we concentrating on false righteousness?” analyzed people’s minds to focus on their own righteous.
Korean and Japanese has similar groupism, but they are different on reason. Korean focus on collectivism due to “Wurijuei” which is voluntarily solidarity as family kind while Japanese focus on collectivism due to avoid blames passively. Korean feels comfortable in biding relationship and are eager to keep the family kind biding in any relationship.
He sees all human mind forms from social relationship fundamentally.
And all social relationships are affected by the concept of what justice is. Korean’s consciousness on righteousness is stronger among other peoples.
He worried about both young people’s concept of fairness and old people’s concept of extreme hostile, antagonizing instead righteousness.
Both concepts make social division not social integration. Righteous need consideration for the weak. But this kind of twisted justice bring discrimination on the weak as woman, foreigner, not regular worker. Righteousness can be justified once the weak can be protected in their community. This is what Bible says as well.
Only fairness cannot be righteous. It focuses on only personal ability not on unfair social structure. For better safe society we need to consider more the weak or the loser to keep our healthy society in very complicated situation.
When everyone can have their own place in our society even though they have variety of backgrounds and spectrum, our society can become safer and productive one.
Today Bible let us know God uses the righteous to embrace the weak.
Let us read together Matthew’s Gospel 1:18-21,
“This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quickly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
Mary was found to be with child before coming together with Joseph for marriage. This problem could be big problem in that time to lose life. Bible introduced Joseph to be righteous man. Because he seemed to consider the weak rather than his own reputation.
He did not want to expose her to public disgrace. He had in mind to divorce her quickly. but angel of the Lord appeared to him and let him know that what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit and the baby Jesus will save people from sins.
Joseph obeyed what God ordered. He brought Mary and become protector for Mary and baby Jesus according to order of the Lord. So, Bible says he is righteous man. Through his righteous mind Jesus Christ could be protected in dark world.
Joseph had a dream and listened will of God spiritually and done without hesitation. He has righteousness and obedience before God. This shows us that through whom God uses in accomplishing work of God.
Verse 24-25 say,
“When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son, And he gave him the name Jesus.”
The righteous follows what God ordered with obedience because that is righteous. They focus on the weak rather than their own benefit. So, God uses them in working for kingdom of God.
Brothers and sisters in the Lord,
Let us be righteous before God and consider the weak for peace and safe in our community.
In John’s Gospel 8, Jesus forgave a woman captured in committing sin. He said, stone her if you are not sinner. But all could not stone her and left.
John’s Gospel 8:11 say,
“No one, sir, she said, then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”
People said that eliminating that kind of sinner is way to keep their society. But Jesus said that giving them repent is wat to keep their society.
Let us consider the weaknesses in our world. This is heart of God who love and forgive us for our salvation. All righteousness comes from Word of God. Only righteousness can lead to saving all life. Righteousness and love belong to God.
One lady in college loved a blind man. She loved him due to his weakness. She wanted to get married to him. The man said, after long marriage, I have been living with the most beautiful woman in the world because I cannot see her look but can see her heart.
Psalm 119:137-138 say,
“Righteous are you, O Lord, and your laws are righteous. The statutes you have laid down are righteous; they are fully trustworthy.”
God be with all of you, Amen.
